Jack Buckby Amber Rudd has only been back in the Cabinet a matter of days, and she’s already reminding us why we didn’t like her. The new Work and Pensions Secretary undermined the Prime Minister ay, suggesting that Parliament wouldn’t allow a No Deal Brexit to happen, and that a second referendum could in fact be on the cards.
Since revealing her plan, the Prime Minister has been warning ministers and MPs that it’s her deal or no deal, but Rudd suggested today that as there isn’t a majority in the House of Commons in favour of No Deal, then it simply wouldn’t happen.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’S Today programme bout the vote on Mrs May’s deal, expected to take place next month, she said[4]:
“If it doesn’t get through, anything could happen. The Brexiteers may lose their Brexit”.
This is a real fear for Brexiteers. It seems that Mrs May is positioning this option as the only way we’ll ever get Brexit – and if we reject it, well, it’s just our own fault. We had our chance to support a Brexit deal, she’ll say. We ruined it, she’ll say.
Liz Truss, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, echoed Rudd’s statements, too. She suggested that this is a ‘historic opportunity to leave the EU’ and that it might be put at risk. On BBC Radio 5 Live, she said:
“If my colleagues don’t vote for this in parliament, we are in serious danger of not leaving at all”.
So there we have it. We were wondering all along just how they would get away with conning us out of Brexit, and it’s not through a second referendum. It’s through the threat of a second referendum. And that threat is real. Even Jeremy Corbyn during PMQs today, quipped that it’s good that other people are ‘considering all options’ (second referendum) while May makes such a mess out of the Brexit negotiations.
